It’s that time of year again, and what a fantastic time of year it is. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is one of the major highlights of the city’s calendar and we are proud to be involved, working alongside Assembly Festival to host a fantastic programme of shows.
70 Years of Fringe
The Fringe, like ourselves, celebrates a milestone anniversary this year. For 70 years the Edinburgh Fringe has been at the forefront of creative and artistic expression. It was in 1947 when eight theatre companies turned up uninvited to perform at the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival. They were refused entry to the programme but decided to perform on the fringe of the Festival anyway. So, the Fringe was born and has remained true to the defiance expressed by those who performed in 1947, upholding its open access principle that permits anyone with a story to tell and a venue willing to host them to participate.
The Fringe at Assembly Rooms
This year, Assembly Rooms is once again a proud host venue working with Riverside Studios and Assembly Festival who have organised a high-quality, diverse line up of performances including theatre, comedy magic and more. We have four performance spaces with our Ballroom, Music Hall and Drawing Rooms all making the transformation into performance spaces and theatres. But not to be confined within our walls, the activity will spill out onto George Street which will be closed to traffic outside our venue during the festival. Here you can enjoy the outdoor bar, grab some street food, find our box office and experience FuturePlay’s VR Domes.
What is FuturePlay? Well, it’s a continuation of the venue’s 2016 foray into digital entertainment and it celebrates, explores and showcases cutting-edge creative content and ideas at the intersection of art and technology. For 2017, Riverside Studios produce the programme in association with Assembly Festival. A range of immersive, experiential and thought-provoking activity will be on offer including the outdoor virtual reality domes, tech zones, interactive games, a range of leading speakers, theatre and events, all exploring art, technology and their amalgamation.
2017 is set to be a landmark year for the Festival Fringe and we are very excited about the programme of events here at Assembly Rooms and beyond across the city, with over two weeks of festival euphoria!
